Barrie Colts Week 2 Recap. #OHL

The Barrie Colts are coming out of week 2 of the OHL season with 2-1-1-0 record which has them in 3rd place in the Central Division.

Barrie went 1-0-1-0 over this past week with a win and an OT loss VS the Sudbury Wolves. Here is how the past week looked for the Colts.

Game 3 VS Sudbury Wolves.
The Colts played their first game of home-and-home series against Quinton Byfield and the visiting Sudbury Wolves.

Colts starting goalie: Kai Edmonds

The Wolves came out strong to start the game and peppered the Ponies with 8 shots through the first 5 minutes of regulation. Kai looked strong early in the game which is a good sign considering it was his first start of the season. Ben Hawerchuk would take a checking from behind penalty early in the game, which the Ponies would kill off but shortly after, David Levin would score his 1st of the season to put the Wolves up 1-0 early.

Less than 2 minutes the Colts would strike back on a Lucas Chiodo goal to tie the game 1-1. Matej Pekar and Christopher Cameron both added assists on the goal.

The Colts generated more chances quickly after the goal but couldn't beat Jake McGrath again until the 14:48 mark of the period when Lucas Chiodo scored his second goal of the night. Tyler Tucker and Ryan Suzuki both earned assists and the Colts would leave the 1st period up 2-1.

Barrie came out strong in the 2nd putting up a pair of goals in the first minute of the period. Tyler Tucker scored his 2nd of the season (assists to Jason Willms and Christopher Cameron) and Colts rookie Matej Pekar would follow up with his 3rd of the season (assist to Joey Keane) to put the Colts up 3-1. This would be the game winning goal.

Just past the 2 minute mark, Lucas Chiodo would complete the hat-trick (assists to Joey Keane and Ryan Suzuki) and Ben Hawerchuk would score a power-play goal shortly after to increase the Colts lead to 5-1. (assists to Jason Willms and Ryan Suzuki)

A little more than 3 minutes later, Ben Hawerchuk would score his 2nd of the night (Assists to Matej Pekar and Ryan Suzuki). Colts lead 6-1.

The 3rd period started with another early Colts goal. Jason Willms scored his 1st of the season (assist to Joey Keane). Sam Rhodes scored and Ryan Suzuki would also add a goal to put the Colts up 10-1. Sudbury scored a couple late goals, but Barrie would pick up the W.

Colts won 10-3.

  • Lucas Chiodo (3G,2A) and Ryan Suzuki (1G,4A) both had 5 point nights.
  • Matej Pekar (1G,2A), Jason Willms (1G,2A) and Joey Keane (3A) had 3 point nights.
  • Jason Willms and Luke Bignell were the best Colts at draws. Both were 50% in the face-off circle.
  • Colts went 1 for 2 on the power-play and killed 5 of 6 penalties.
  • Kai Edmonds made 33 saves.
  • Attendance at BMC was 2,641.

Game 4 VS Sudbury Wolves.
The Colts were in Sudbury for their second, and final game of the week.

Colts starting goalie: Kai Edmonds

Barrie didn't look as strong to start out this game, only getting 5 shots on goal through the opening frame. That still didn't stop them from leaving the 1st with a 1-0 lead. Ryan Suzuki scored his 3rd of the season at the 9:32 mark. (assists to Matej Pekar and Lucas Chiodo.

The 2nd period was a tight contest that saw both teams get chances on the power-play, but neither could score. The Colts still led 1-0 after the 2nd period. Kai Edmonds had 21 saves through two periods.

Jason Willms took an early high sticking penalty to start the 3rd but Barrie was able to kill it off. At the 3:26 mark, Ryan Suzuki scored his 2nd of the night (assist to Lucas Chiodo) to put the Ponies up 2-0.

Sudbury got on the board mid-way through the period on a Darian Pilon goal to cut the Colts lead in half. A little more than 2 minutes later they would tie the game when Emmett Serensits would score his 1st goal of the season. The game was tied 2-2.

Both teams would exchange man-advantages but neither could score to end the 3rd. The game would head to OT.

Barrie came out with a few shots on goal but it would be rookie Quinton Byfield scoring the game winner at the 2:23 mark of OT. The shot was the Wolves only shot in OT but it was enough for the  W.

Wolves won 3-2.

NOTES:

  • Ryan Suzuki (2G) and Lucas Chiodo (2A) both got 2 points each.
  • Colts were 0 for 5 on the power-play but killed off all 6 penalties.
  • Kai Edmonds made 30 saves in his first loss of the season.
  • Jason Willms was strong in the face-off circle winning 17 of 24 attempts, while Ryan Suzuki struggled winning just 7 of 23.
  • Attendance in Sudbury was 2,250.

Observations through week 2.
Barrie Scored 12 goals this past week which is an improvement from the 11 in the previous week. Their 23 goals this season is the most in the OHL.

Barrie has served 63 penalty minutes through 2 weeks of the OHL season. Only Sudbury, North Bay and Kingston have served more penalty minutes. Though the team has been decent on the penalty kill with an 87% success rate, they need to be more disciplined.

Ryan Suzuki sits at the top of OHL point leaders with 11 points through 4 games played. His 7 assists are tied for the most in the league. Lucas Chiodo's 8 points are 4th most league wide.

Ryan Suzuki, Lucas Chiodo, Justin Murray and Joey Keane are all a +8 through two weeks. All 4 are leading the league in that category.

Lucas Chiodo was named the OHL Player of the Week. He put up 3 goals and 4 assists through 2 games this week.

It was interesting seeing the Colts start Kai Edmonds in both games this week. If the team plans on starting Maxim and Kai equally through the season, they might consider splitting weekly games up between the two instead of using one goalie each week. You can't help but wonder what the teams strategy with goaltenders is this season. Maybe the team is considering moving one? Either way, both goalies have shown they are ready to play this season and the Colts are not lacking talent in that position. A good chance the the coaching staff is going to let them battle it out for the starting position.

The Nashville Predators AHL team, The Milwaukee Admirals played a game this past week without Zachary Magwood in the lineup. Not that you should look too much into it but that could be a sign that he could be sent back to Barrie. You would think that if he was a lock to make the team that he would get as many pre-season games as possible. Again, this is just our view of the situation. Still no clarity on his status this season.

The Colts have 1 home game in the next 5 games on the schedule. Their next game is at home on Thursday VS Mississauga and they won't return to BMC until Saturday, October 13th when they host the Niagara IceDogs. Barrie plays 11 games through the month of October and only 3 are at home.
