Barrie Colts Week 6 Recap. #OHL

The Barrie Colts are coming out of week 6 of the OHL season with a 8-6-1-0 record which has them in 3rd place in the Central Division.

The team played VS North Bay and Windsor this past week and went 1-1. Here is how the games played out, as well as some additional notes and thoughts.

Game 14 VS North Bay Battalion.
Barrie kicked off their week at the North Bay Memorial Gardens VS North Bay Battalion.

Colts starting goalie: Kai Edmonds

Barrie found their way in the penalty box early in this game on a Mathew Hill tripping call. However, it would be Matej Pekar scoring the 1st goal of the night short handed. It was Pekar's 3rd short handed goal of the season and 8th goal.

Less than two minutes later, North Bay would tie things up 1-1 on a Justin Brazeau goal.

Later in the period, Joey Keane took an Interference penalty, and Justin Brazeau would score his 2nd of the night and 14th of the season. This would be the game winner.

Brandon Coe scored in the 2nd period and David Maier in the 3rd to pull out a 4-1 win over Barrie.

Colts lose 4-1.

NOTES:
  • Special teams killed Barrie this game, allowing 3 goals short handed on 8 penalty kills, and going 0 for 3 on the man advantage.
  • Kai Edmonds made 13 saves on 17 shots before getting pulled in 3rd. Maksim Zhukov replaced him and saved all 7 shots faced.
  • Ben Hawerchuk registered 5 shots on goal, most by a single player in the game.
  • Nathan Allensen took 3 of the 8 penalties for Barrie. (cross checking, delay of game and slashing)

Game 15 VS Windsor Spitfires.
Barrie's second, and final game of the week was VS Curtis Douglas and the Windsor Spitfires. Windsor defeated Barrie 4-3 the previous week, so the team was hopeful to get revenge.

Colts starting goalie: Maksim Zhukov

Barrie came out strong in this game and it wouldn't take them long to get on the board. Lucas Chiodo scored the games first goal at the 1:31 mark to put the Colts up 1-0. Tyler Tucker and Ryan Suzuki were both credited with assists.

Mathew MacDougall would tie the game 1-1, but shortly after that, Lucas Chiodo scored his 2nd of the night and 10th of the season. Tucker and Suzuki both earned their 2nd assists on the night on Chiodo's goal. This would be the game winner.

Just before the 18:00 mark of the 1st, Matej Pekar scored his 4th short handed goal of the season while killing off a Victor Hadfield delay of game penalty. Barrie went up 3-1 to end the 1st period.

Barrie was strong in the 2nd period, out-shooting Windsor 17-12. They would score a pair of goals in the frame. Ryan Suzuki scored his 6th goal of the season on the man advantage with assists to Keane and Chiodo, and Tyson Foerster scored his 2nd of the season with Fleming being credited with an assist. Colts led 5-1.

Jason Willms scored early in the 3rd period to extend the Ponies lead to 6-1. Pekar got an assist on the goal, and that would be it for scoring.

Colts win 6-1.

NOTES:
  • Lucas Chiodo scored 2 goals and added an assist. He now leads the team with 10 goals.
  • Colts went 1 for 6 on the power play and killed off 5 all penalties.
  • Ryan Suzuki scored a goal and added 2 assists. It was his 4th game this season putting up 3 or more points.
  • Matej Pekar (1G,1A) and Tyler Tucker (2A) both had 2 point nights.
  • Jason Willms went 12 for 14 in the face-off circle.
  • Nathan Allensen was a healthy scratch. Maybe a wake up call from the coach after taking a few penalties in the previous game?
  • Maksim Zhukov made 30 saves on 31 shots faced.
  • BMC attendance was 3,923.

Observations through week 6.
Despite the poor showing in North Bay, Barrie managed to bounce back with a strong showing at home VS Windsor. Kai had a tough night VS North Bay, but between penalty troubles and not getting a consistent playing schedule, it is hard to blame him. Goaltending this season has been slightly confusing with the team randomly flipping through the 3 goalies, and unfortunately it is hard to expect Jet and Kai to find any momentum fighting for a backup spot. Will be interesting to see what the team does moving forward.

Penalties are not a new issue here in Barrie but one the team really needs to try and figure out. While they have been good on the penalty kill, it is not a good situation to be in. The team took 13 penalties this week through 2 games. Yes, the only allowed 1 goal and scored 2 on the PK, the team has to find a way to stay out of the box. They have served 228 penalty minutes already this season. No other team in the league has more than 200 this season.

Ben Hawerchuk continues to impress this year. Playing with Lucas Chiodo and Matej Pekar was a situation many Colts fans questioned at the years start, but Benny has been really proving people wrong. His 9 goals this season is tied for 2nd on the team. Only Lucas Chiodo has scored more with 10. His 13 points is 5th most on the team. A couple areas of his game that have stood out this season is his skating, discipline while remaining very aggressive and willingness to shoot the puck. Hawerchuk currently has 45 shots on goal. Only Matej Pekar has more shots with 49.

Buffalo Sabres prospect Matej Pekar scored 2 short handed goals this week. His 4 short handed goals are the most in the OHL. He also has added a pair of power play goals this season.

Saturday night, late in the Windsor game, captain Justin Murray took a blindsiding penalty and was given a game misconduct. There was some talk as to weather he would receive a suspension. The league has noted a pair of suspensions from last week, but as of right now there is nothing for Murray. Doesn't mean the league still won't do anything about it but at this point, I wouldn't expect it.
