Last night there was no other games on around the OHL so
OBVIOUSLY the entire hockey world was watching the Colts vs Generals. You know,
because there was NO other hockey going on. None. Unrelated, we would like to congratulate
Team USA on not beating Team Canada in the gold medal game at the World Juniors
in a shootout. A gold medal being awarded in a shootout is crazy so this
obviously couldn’t happen.
FINE, THERE WAS HOCKEY AND CANADA LOST IN A SHOOTOUT!
Congrats to Team USA on an incredible tournament and to Team Canada who as
always made their country proud. An amazing tournament and the best team
without question won.
Tonight, the Barrie Colts head to the Hershey Centre to
face the Mississauga Steelheads.
Barrie VS. Mississauga this season.
Barrie faces off against Mississauga for only the second
of six meetings this regular season. The first and only game so far was on
October, 20th and saw take the 5-4 overtime win at BMC.
Barrie held a late 4-3 lead until Ryan McLeod tied the
game with 1 minute remaining in regulation to tie things at 4-4 (After last nights’
game, is this a theme?). Overtime solved nothing so they had to go to the
shootout. Roy Radke scored the only goal giving the Barrie Colts the 5-4 win.
Lucas Chiodo got a goal and an assist. Anthony Stefano
and Roy Radke scored, while rookie Tom Hedberg scored his first career OHL goal
for the Colts and added an assist.
The Trout outshot the Ponies 39-30. Barrie went 1 for 6
on the power play and 1 for 4 on the penalty kill. Mississauga also won 40 of
73 face-offs.
David Ovsjannikov got the start for the Colts and made 34
saves on 39 shots.
Mississauga Hammers Hamilton.
Mississauga has been the hottest team in the Central
Division in recent weeks. Their 7-2-1-0 record over the last 10 games is the
divisions best. The Trout enter tonight’s game riding a 3-game winning streak. Since
December, 30th they have victories over Niagara, North Bay and
Hamilton. They have only allowed 2 goals over those 3 games. Jacob Ingham has
got the start in all 3 of those games and made 79 saves over those games. You should be
impressed by the Barrie natives game right now.
Their last win came Wednesday over the Pittb-errrr, the
Hamilton Pen… Sorry. The Bulldogs. Nathan Bastian scored a goal and an assist
for the Steelheads, while Owen Tippett scored a pair of goals earning him the
star of the game. Trout out-shot the Dogs 34 to 25. Mississauga went 0 for 4 on
the PP and allowed a short-handed goal over 5 penalty kills.
As we said, rookie Jacob Ingham got the start for
Mississauga and stopped 24 of 25 shots faced in the win. The win was his 5th
on the season.
Colts beat the Generals.
Barrie is coming off a win last night against the Oshawa
Generals. The team came out strong. Roy Radke(7) and Ben Hawerchuk(4) both
scored early to give the Colts a 2-0 lead. Oshawa brought it within a goal with
a couple minutes remaining in the 1st period.
Domenic Commisso scored at the 14:44 mark of the 3rd
period to spoil the Colts victory in regulation. In overtime, it would be Colts
captain Cordell James(13) scoring 32 seconds into OT to give the Colts the win.
Anthony Stefano and Tom Hedberg both assisted on the goal.
Barrie Out-shot Oshawa 38-26. Strong effort for a team
who has had troubles generating shot production. More so when you consider they
only had one chance with the man advantage. They were not able to score with
their one PP opportunity. They also allowed a goal on 4 penalty kills.
Ruan Badenhorst got his 3rd start of the
season for the Colts and earned his first win on the year stopping 24 of 26
shots on goal.
Final Thoughts.
Colts need to come out strong like they did last night. If
they can find a way to generate offence like they did last night they could
snap the Trout’s win streak while extending their own to two games. Though Ruan has played well and is coming off a win, I would look for Christian Propp to get the start tonight.
Keys to Success: Shoot the puck. That is all. Keep doing that, and goals will come. Heck,
they could even get some goals on the power play. Shoot the puck for goals, it
seems like a difficult concept.
