Lipanov, who was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning 76th overall at the 2017 NHL draft has played in 35 games for the Ponies this season. He has 11 goals and 18 assists over those games. Alexey has been strong this season but has only managed to put up 1 assist over his last 6 games played. Lipanov will be reunited with former teammate Krill Nizhnikov how was traded to Sudbury before the Luchuk deal.TRADE: Barrie Colts acquire forward Dmitry Sokolov and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2022 for forward Alexey Lipanov. Sokolov has also played 35 games this season, putting up 20 goals and totaling 38 points. He has spent 3 seasons in Sudbury, playing in 167 points posting 98 goals;64 assists for a total of 162 games. Sokolov has been strong for the Wolves scoring 10 points in his last 10 games played. Solid production, considering the team only has 2 wins in that time.
Lipanov is eligible to play in the AHL next season and many have expected that it would be the case. Sokolov is an incredible player and though (slightly) shorter, he is a bigger bodied player weighing around 50 pounds more than Lipanov. Sokolov also spent time with Team Russia at the World Juniors. Despite the tournament not going his way, he did get a chance to play with Colts forward Andrei Svechnikov, and scored a goal and 2 assists in 5 games. Adding him to the top line with Svechnikov and Luchuk should be a fun watch.
Good chance next season Lipanov will play in AHL.— Gene Pereira (@GenePereira1) January 10, 2018
We would like to wish Lipanov the best of luck in Sudbury, and are happy to welcome Sokolov to the Barrie Colts!
