Barrie Colts Player of the Week: Matej Pekar. (Week 1)

The Barrie Colts opening week has come and gone, seeing the team go 2-0. Matej Pekar helped the team in a big way returning to the team after suffering an injury that had the Sabres prospect miss a good piece of the season.

Pekar scored five goals (tied for second-most in the league) and an assist. His six points have him tied for second-most points in the league with Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves.

Pekar scored a pair of goals in the season opener, including the game-winner in the teams 3-0 victory over the North Bay Batallion. He also generated six shots on goal.

Pekar went on to improve the next night posting a hat-trick and an assist in the teams 6-2 win over the London Knights.

Last season, Pekar scored 14 goals and 22 assists in 33 games. With five goals already this season, it is safe to assume he will surpass his season-high made last year.

Honourable Mentions.
Jet Greaves started the 2019-20 season with a shutout in the teams 3-0 season-opener victory over North Bay. Greaves made 29 saves, and his shutout matches his total of one from his rookie campaign.

Team captain Jason Willms also had a strong start to the season scoring one goal and adding four assists in the first two games. Willms was not only producing well but also went 58% in the face-off circle.

St. Louis Blues prospect Tyler Tucker was a monster on the blueline for the Ponies playing the game we expect from Tucker at this point. Tucker was reliable defensively while bringing a physical game as always. He also put up four assists while generating six shots on goal.

Nathan Allensen might not have had the season many expected from him last season, but things should improve for the defenceman this year. Playing with Tucker will be an excellent fit for him this seasons. With his defensive reliability, he will allow Tucker to take chances with breakout plays. Allensen earned an assist this weekend while posting a team-best +7.
