Luke Bignell was drafted by the Barrie Colts 85th overall at the 2016 OHL Priority Selection. The Kitchener, ON native, joined the Colts as a rookie during the 2017-18 season. Throughout 56 regular-season games, Bignell would go on to total seven goals and five assists. He showed signs of being an offensive threat with his quickness and strong forecheck. Not only was he aggressive when producing offensive opportunities but he also had physical elements to his game including a readiness to drop the gloves.
During his sophomore year, I got the chance to speak to him about what he had worked on in the offseason. The forward said his main focus was to work on his size and speed, and those attributes were more noticeable.
Bignell had a more significant role on the team that year. While he might not have seen a tremendous increase in point production with nine goals and 10 assists, he still was a force offensively. Biggie played in all 68 regular-season games for the Colts and was always a physical threat that opposing opponents needed to be conscious of.
2019-20 would be his best effort with the club even though it would unexpectedly be his last year. In January, Luke was named team captain. The season would not end how anyone would have expected, but Bignell finished it strong setting a career-high with 14 goals and 23 assists. Sadly, COVID would shut down the remainder of his OHL career.
Bignell was an incredible captain who showed continual improvement and willingness to stick up for his teammates. He could inspire his guys with his big hits, strong penalty-kill effort or a timely goal.
We will remember Bignell for his hard work, his commitment to our community and his willingness to be the best he could be. Thank you, Luke and best of luck in Guelph!
