Game Recap: Colts lose to Spits in OT. #OHL

Last night the Windsor Spitfires defeated the Barrie Colts to pick up their first win of the season. (1-2-0-0) The victory would come in overtime when  L. Kirwan scored his first OHL career goal with just 16 seconds remaining in overtime.

After the first period the Colts were looking good having a 2-0 lead over the Spits. Nick Pastorious put the Colts on the board early (assists to C. James and J. Carrick) and not long after Mangiapane would score to give the Colts a 2-0 lead. (assists to J. Blandisi and C. Garcia)

Lemieux took a fighting major and the Colts took 2 minor penalties. The team is still having trouble staying out of the box but in this period at least Windsor didn't make them pay. Spits out shot the Colts 12-10 in the frame.

The second period was a mess for the Colts. The fact that they took 6 penalties didn't help them at all. 2:44 into the period  A. Luchuk would cut the Colts lead in half and over the next 10 minutes, the Colts got really messy allowing the spitfires to score a couple quick goals by L. Brown and C. Marchese giving the Spitfires a 3-2 lead.

Late in the period Blandisi would get his league leading 5th goal of the season to tie the game with an assist going to Jonny Laser.

The Colts were out shot 20 - 11 in the period.

Third period was a little more balanced. The Colts had the edge in shots 13 - 10 and managed not to take any bad penalties. Both sides had some solid chances to take the lead but neither could find the back of the net. This game would go to OT.

With 16 seconds in overtime, L. Kirwan would get the game winning goal for Windsor giving them their first win of the season.

The Colts were out shot 45 - 36 in this game. The second period really was when the team fell apart. Who knew taking a crap tonne of penalties could bite you in the backside? (see my keys to success) from last game... EVERYONE KNOWS THAT!)

Notes:

  • As good as Brendan Lemieux is, his working the point last night was not pretty at times. I understand some teams throw forwards at the point to try to score but we saw a few times where that resulted in chances against. Lemieux is great but could be better utilized in front of the net doing dirty work.
  • Blandisi had another incredible night, scoring a goal and getting an assist. He is currently in 3rd for points in the OHL with 7. (5 goals, 2 assists)
  • The Colts need to find a way to tighten up in there end. At times they look great and then they will just turn into a mess. It is early enough in the season that maybe mixing up the blue line wont hurt. I would not mind seeing Garcia moved up with Laser. I would not be shocked to see Andersson and Webster mesh well together.
The Colts head to Sarnia tonight to take on the Sarnia Sting (0-1-1-0) at RBC Centre for a 7:05 puck drop.
